Bronze statuettes played a central role in the artist’s early career. The Gorham Company, which promoted the work of several women sculptors, produced and exhibited Hyatt Huntington’s work for decades. In 1928, Gorham showed a Joan of Arc sculpture in their Famous Small Bronzes exhibition; according to the catalogue, their casts of this work came in two sizes: 15 inches and 51 inches (the height of the piece displayed here). The artist, a proud owner of many deerhounds, donated this cast to the Scottish Deerhound Club of America in 1936.
