These small bronze plaques were sculpted to accompany Huntington’s paired, bronze flagpole bases in the courtyard of the Hispanic Society of America. Previously thought to be intended for a set of bronze doors, recently discovered letters unambiguously identify the plaques as decorative adjuncts to the large flagpole bases. The plaques exist in duplicate—some even in triplicate—and were likely intended to enliven the flagpoles’ sixteen-sided stone pedestals in concert with a set of eight small portrait plaques. However, they were never installed, for reasons that remain unclear. The artist’s precise modeling, even in these small-scale decorative reliefs, is apparent in the naturalism of the animals’ heads, and the artful variation in their encircling wreathes, tassels, finials and ribbons.  –DR
