Foregoing her formal instruction at the Art Students League, Hyatt Huntington spent much of her time at the New York Zoological Park in order to directly observe her animal subjects. Now known as the Bronx Zoo, the park opened in 1899 and allowed the artist to sketch and model live primates at the famous Monkey House.  –JW
