Collection Syracuse University Art Galleries, gift of the Estate of Anna Hyatt Huntington (1974.030)

Anna Hyatt Huntington illustrates the moment of the animal’s greatest flexion as the tiger stretches from the tip of its tail to its front paws. The right leg, tense and elongated, fully extends itself and visually counterbalances the animal’s crossed front paws. The tiger’s body leans slightly left as the animal throws back its head, eyes closed and mouth wide. The curves of the tiger’s arched neck and long tail give the sculpture an air of elegance, while the detailed claws and sharp teeth underscore the animal’s ferocity, even at this seemingly non-threatening instant. Gorham Company Founders cast the celebrated Yawning Tiger 118 times and created an additional 359 statuettes of a smaller version.  –DRF
